Pack for a purpose

CRS Tours is a proud member of Pack for a Purpose, an initiative that allows travelers like you to make a lasting impact in the community at your travel destination. If you save just a few kilos of space in your suitcase and bring supplies for area schools or medical clinics in need, you’ll make a priceless impact in the lives of our local children and families.

The goal is to assist travelers who want to say thank you in this manner or who simply want to expand their generosity beyond their own communities. The supply lists for destinations on our website are provided directly by the local community-based projects which receive and use the supplies, enabling travelers to make informed decisions and to bring items which meet the needs of those who will be using them.

CRS Tours currently supports three poor schools from Drake Bay, in Costa Rica. The schools are located in rural areas, where most of the students have to walk long distances to get to school and the access that parents have to the school supplies is often difficult because of the distance and their economic situation.

If you would like to donate school supplies, please let your travel consultant know.  CRS Tours will collect the items at your hotel and forward them to the 3 schools.

El Refugio School

Location: Drake Caletas
Students: 10 children aged between 7 and 13 years
Teachers: 1

Caletas in a small but very pretty seaside village of Drake Bay area, is located about 5 km south of Agujitas (central Bahia Drake). It is a special place because it can only be reached by foot or by sea, there is no public transport because there are no roads or trails.

The school has 10 children who attend a school in which there is only one teacher for all grades and all subjects. It’s complicated, and it would be very convenient to have better conditions, but because of its location it’s very difficult. This school didn’t have proper maintenance in a long time, and due to its proximity to the sea and the forest, it deteriorates easily. The families in this community have low incomes and cannot cover the needs that infrastructure requires, but they make big efforts as organizing activities to gradually collect the material to make arrangements.

The school also has a dining room and kitchen for the children to lunch at school, a bathroom and a small room for the teacher.

Drake Bay High School

Location: Agujitas de Drake
Students: 94 aged between 13 and 19
Teachers: 5

Pack for a purpose. In 2012 the school was affected by a sliding tierra debido, a storm that hit the area. Since that time, the facilities were declared uninhabitable and had to move students to the Community Hall.

At present 94 students are taught at the community hall, which has been fitted with false walls to separate the levels, but the noise and heat makes it impossible for the young people to have concentration.

This is the only high school that exists in Drake Bay , so the Ministry of Education has designated a minibus to transport some students from remote communities, but there are other students who live up the mountain, where there is access conveys, so you have to walk 30 minutes to get to school .

Most families are very poor, where only the father works, or single mothers. In these families there are young people who do not yet have the uniform to attend classes or needed supplies.

The school board has asked the government to buy land and build a new school. Although the request was approved since 2013, is still not possible to build because there is no drinking water in the land acquired, this is one of the major problems in the area of Drake Bay.
