Scuba diving in Costa Rica... We offer the best!
Less than a decade ago, Costa Rica was virtually unknown as a destination for diving. Suddenly it is being applauded for its variety of marine wildlife. New facilities along the pacific coastline are now offering first-class dive boats and fully stocked dive shops. And divers have the excitement of truly virgin diving in areas never before explored.
The most recent dive-site development has been along the pacific coast of Guanacaste province. Here you’ll see little live coral and few reefs. In their place divers will find a huge variety of fish, soft corals and invertebrates a result of the abundance of plankton that thrive in this tropical areas. Most diving take part around rock formations usually alongside rocky islands or pinnacles located miles away offshore. Visibility can often be obscured specially in rainy season from May to November, where rivers enter the ocean.
The best places known in this side of the country are Murcielagos Island and the Catalinas Island, here you can find grouper, snapper, jacks, sharks, mantas, as well as tropical species, Cortez angelfish, bright yellow butterflies and eagle rays are common. Great bull sharks conglomerate at the farthest point in Murcielago.

Scuba diving in Guanacaste is superb as the water conditions here are near perfect most of the year. With plenty of beaches accessible to everyone, you do not have to worry about overcrowded diving zones as well, as you have miles and miles of remote coastline to dive in. One of the best scuba diving zones in Guanacaste has to be the Playa del Coco, located in the north of the Nicoya Peninsula. The beaches here are beautiful; however, the scuba diving here is amazing with a plethora of marine life to enjoy. Manta rays, sharks, whales, dolphins, turtles, eels, and schools of vibrant tropical fish can be seen swimming here everyday.
For an even greater variety of aquatic life, head out to Isla Catalina and Isla Murcielagos. Cortez angelfish, parrotfish, clown shrimp, spotted eagle rays, hogfish and bull sharks are some of the many marine dwellers here. The nearby Playa Hermosa and Playa Ocotal also offer some fantastic diving opportunities.
Additionally, Playa Flamingo and Tamarindo have some great dive sites to choose from. The gentle white sandy beach of Playa Samara also offers some good scuba diving.
South Pacific
Boasting one of Costa Rica’s most stunning natural wonders, the Parque Nacional Corcovado, South Puntarenas is the perfect destination for an adventure traveler. Rugged and secluded, much of this region remains untouched and pristine, giving tourists the feeling as if they have stepped into another world. Unlike the rest of Costa Rica, which is taken over by tourism, the landscape here is rich and green with nature reigning supreme.
The best place to go scuba diving in South Puntarenas is around the Isla del Caño, which is also the best dive destination in Costa Rica. Considered to be among the most superb dive sites along the Pacific Coast, you can get to the Isla del Caño via boat from Drake Bay. A biological reserve, the Isla del Caño showcases a wealth of marine life with numerous underwater rock formations as well. You can spot over 15 different coral species out here amdist a plethora o brightly colored tropical fish, whales, dolphins, eels and rays. The underwater visibility here is fantastic and divers have a choice of four dive sites to choose from.
Another great dive site accessible from Drake Bay is Parque Nacional Isla del Coco, which sits some 500 km from mainland Costa Rica. Often referred to as the Costa Rican Galapagos, this island has a diverse array of species on land as well as underwater. The marine life here is rich and plentiful with sea turtles, dolphins and topical fish found here in huge numbers. Eighteen species of coral and many crustacean species have also been recorded here. The diving here superb as well, however, permission is needed in advance to visit the park.
