Stay in a very remote virgin jungle and experience one of the most diverse environment in Costa Rica. RARA AVIS is Costa Rica's oldest and purest Rainforest Lodge. Whether you are learning to understand the rainforest with naturalist guides, swimming in crystalline jungle waterfalls, or simply relaxing and watching birds from the hammock on your balcony, Rara Avis is completely isolated from modern civilization. Riding in a covered tractor cart through the forest to get to the Waterfall Lodge draws you back in time from modern civilization of cleared cattle lands to an adventure deep in the forest. If you are looking for tennis courts and swimming pools, hair dryers and televisions, Rara Avis is the wrong place. If what you seek is being in pure nature, deep in the rainforest, with clean and comfortable lodging, with home-style Costa Rican meals, no electricity plus an adventurous learning experience different from ordinary tourism, then Rara Avis will suit you. At the same time, you will be encouraging the wise use of the rainforest - the reason for the existence of Rara Avis.

Rara Avis is at 600-700 meters above sea level (2000 ft): high enough to be cool and comfortable (76 degrees F, 24 degrees C year-round); low enough to be real rainforest.  Stay at the Waterfall Lodge, a comfortable but rustic lodge with rooms set in the jungle, each with a private bath and wrap-around balcony. The lodge is located about 200 meters (600 ft) from a double waterfall.  Visitors in good physical condition can swim at the base of the waterfalls in good weather. An extensive series of trails through untouched virgin forest, ranging from moderate to difficult. All trails have muddy and uneven footing. You may hike alone or accompanied by one of the staff naturalists who will help you see and understand the complex, incredibly diverse life of the jungle.

Important Note:

Rara Avis lies three kilometers (two miles) from El Plástico, about one hour by tractor cart or less than 1,5 hours walking on jungle trails. The most of the people choose to walk through the rainforest while their bags are carried up on the tractor cart, if you decide so, one of our guides will go with you. Please keep in mind that our trails are natural, with uneven and sometimes slippery footing, and the tractor ride to get to the lodge is uncomfortable and not recommended for pregnant women, people with serious back problems, or those with difficulty walking on uneven terrain.

What To Bring:

Access to the lodge can be difficult, so it can be problematic to take large baggage items. Please leave your non-essential baggage locked up in the office in Las Horquetas.
