The captivating backdrop of skyscrapers, noble mansions and green hills will surely fascinate you. The tour begins with a trip to Panama Viejo which dates back from the 16th century (closed on Mondays). Then we continue along the coast to the old town Casco Antiguo. Here you find some of the oldest architecture and buildings of the modern city. The area is known as Casco Viejo or Casco Antiguo. During the tour you will see many unique colonial buildings. Some of those are still largely original and others are nicely and colorfully restored. The historic Casco Antiguo is a UNESCO World Heritage site and has become the center of art, design and cultural development. Many new bars, roof top terraces, restaurants and hotels have opened here. Later on a drive down the Causeway will surprise you with an amazing view of the Panama City skyline before taking you to the Miraflores Locks. Here you will gain a first insight into the inner workings and dimensions of the famous Panama Canal. The viewers terrace offers a unique view of the locks and the ships a through the locks on their way to the Pacific or Atlantic. The Panama Canal is one of the most important waterways in the world. Each year around 14,000 ships are transiting, that is about six percent of the worlds trade. In its museum you will learn many interesting facts about the Canal. The Tour ends at the hotel.

Day 03: Train ride along the Panama Canal Fortress San Lorenzo - Canal expansion

Early morning, take a historic train journey from Panama City to Colón with the original railroad. The trip along the Panama Canal takes 1 hour and leads you through jungle and across the Lake Gatun. The railway was finished in 1855. The French association of the Panama Canal acquired the line in 1880 to help during the construction of the Canal. In 1904 the track and Canal were bought by the Americans and operated until 1979. In 1998 the railway was privatized and consequently modernized. Since 2001 the railway is back in use and an exceptional attraction. Another highlight is the visit to the Panama Canal Expansion Observation Center in Agua Clara, which shows you how the new Panama Canal lock system is working. It opened in June 2016. The current building has now on both sides of the waterway new access roads, as well as larger water-saving locks. The expansion costs were about $ 5.25 billion. Since the expansion, ships of the so-called Postpanamax-class with up to 14,000 containers can transit the Canal.

Afterwards a beautiful drive will take you to the San Lorenzo Fort. Treasures from Peru were collected and sent en route to Spain from this 15th century fort. The ruins are located in the middle of the jungle and encompass a series of forts, castle buildings, fortifications and walls that surround the bay. After sightseeing we drive you back to the hotel.

Day 10: Boat – Bus Transfer to Guapiels - Arenal/Fortuna

Arenal Volcano, located in La Fortuna, is the most iconic volcano in Costa Rica. For most of modern history, Volcán Arenal was just another dormant volcano surrounded by fertile farmland. But for about 42 years, the volcano was an ever-active and awe-striking natural wonder, producing menacing ash columns, massive explosions and streams of glowing molten rock almost daily. The fiery views are gone for now, but Arenal is still a worthy destination, thanks to the dense forest covering her lower slopes and foothills, and her picture-perfect conical shape up top. This area is rugged and varied, rich with wildlife and laced with trails.

Things to do:

Soak in a volcano-heated hot spring: Grand Spa at Tabacón. Grab a robe and settle into the jungle Jacuzzi while spa valets serve you healthy smoothies. Treatments like the chocolate body wrap and the couples’ two-hour massage utilize locally made products and end with champagne and fresh fruit. For a full day of pampering, request the spa package, which includes access to the thermal baths, and lunch or dinner.
Hike to a waterfall: The reward for a tough hike down to Catarata de la Fortuna is a magnificent waterfall, plummeting nearly 250 feet into a freshwater pool.
Watch wildlife: Birds, monkeys, turtles, caiman, and sloths abound in the 25,000-acre Caño Negro National Wildlife Refuge.

Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridges: A series of trails and bridges form a loop through the primary rain forest of a 250-acre private reserve, providing great bird-watching and volcano viewing. Sixteen fixed and hanging bridges allow you to see the forest at different levels. Trails are open rain or shine, and there are things to do in both types of weather, including horseback-riding tours that start at 9 am and 1 pm.

There you can take a refreshing swim in its cool waters or take pictures of its beauty.

At 1:30 pm it is time to eat lunch. We will stop at a nice restaurant near the town of La Fortuna. Later at around 3:00 pm we will head towards the Arenal Volcano National Park to hike on the trail called lava slides to get to the viewpoint that is closest to the volcano.
