Rincon de la Vieja National Park is a special place because it sits in a part of Guanacaste where the flat plains meet the jungle-filled mountains. For this reason, in dry times of year the area will remain green and vibrant. Since there is more vegetation, there are also better chances to spot wildlife. Another big draw of Rincon de la Vieja National Park are the many volcanic elements. Active steam vents and bubbling mud pots can be seen right along the trails. Boasting fantastic sceneries, beautiful waterfalls, soothing hot springs, boiling mud pits, a fresh water volcanic lagoon, picnic areas and long-winding trails that one can hike or horseback ride, the Rincon de la Vieja National Park is paradise for hikers. Spread over 14,083 hectares, this park is also the habitat of an impressive array of wildlife, insects and birds like the Spider Monkey, the Blue-crowned Motmot, the Emerald Toucanet, jaguars, cougars and tapirs. Day 19 Self drive to Sierpe, park your car rental. Boat Transfer from Sierpe to Drake Bay Area

The village of Drake Bay sits on the Pacific side of the peninsula but is well protected from ocean swells due to its position in a wide cove. One reason Drake Bay is so special is that it is difficult to access and gives you that feeling of being away from it all! Arriving via boat is a great experience. These boats are about 20 feet long and are covered for shade. They leave from the small riverside town of Sierpe and bring you down the beautiful Sierpe River, through mangroves, out to the ocean, and along the coastline to Drake Bay. Make sure to wear sandals or other footwear that can be easily taken off or get wet. Once you arrive in the village, nature surrounds you. Drake Bay is the kind of place where you could swing in a hammock all day and still see more amazing wildlife than almost anywhere else in the world. But to make the experience even better, there are lots of outdoor activities that will show you even more!

Special Note: Please be advised that the lodges in Drake Bay operate with shared taxi boat transfers with locals leaving from Sierpe to Drake Bay. The entry is a crossing of open sea with strong currents. This sometimes may be a bumpy ride. Also the landing at the beach is wet and may be rough if there are high waves or bad weather, you will have to walk through water. There is no dock at the hotel. We do not recommend this destination for pregnant or handicapped persons. More upscale lodging does exist in Drake Bay with a dock for more comfort and more private transfer service.

Option A: Pirate Cove Hotel (3 Nights). Bungalow Room. Meals.
Option B: Aguila de Osa (1 Package). Corcovado Jungle Experience Standard Room. Meals.

Day 20 Corcovado National Park Tour, San Pedrillo Station

We will leave at 6 am, and the transfer takes around 30 minutes by boat. A visit to the Corcovado National Park is a must when on the Osa Peninsula. The National Park is one of the most beautiful conservation regions of the world.  Here you are likely to see ocelots, margay, jaguars, tapirs, red macaws, toucans, quetzals and lots more. There may be one hundred different types of trees in one hundred meters. At midday you stop to eat on a deserted beach or swim in San Pedrillo waterfall. The 3 km walk is not terribly difficult but be prepared for a lot of ups and downs through the uneven jungle. You will be ready for a shower and a snooze when you return to the hotel.

Option A: Pirate Cove Hotel (3 Nights). Bungalow Room. Meals.
Option B: Aguila de Osa (1 Package). Corcovado Jungle Experience Standard Room. Meals.

Day 21 Snorkeling at Caño Island

We leave each day at 7:00 a. m.  The transfer to the Island takes between 50 minutes to 1 hour. When the boat arrives to the Island, the instructor will go to the Minaet Station on the Island in order to give the register and show the documents with the reservation and the entrances fees. After that the snorkelers go in the boat with the guide to do snorkel in the points authorized for that.  The new regulation in the island is that is not allowed to do snorkeling from the beach. It is not allowed to eat on the island, neither are there toilets. We will do the first snorkeling and then you can rest on the beach of the Island - we offer water or natural juice - afterwards we will do the second snorkeling, followed by a lunch at the Pirate Cove. Our diving groups are small and always accompanied by a guide authorized for ICT and ACOSA.

Option A: Pirate Cove Hotel (3 Nights). Bungalow Room. Meals.
Option B: Aguila de Osa (1 Package). Corcovado Jungle Experience Standard Room. Meals.

Day 22 Boat Transfer to Sierpe, pick up back your car rental. Selfdrive to San Gerardo de Dota

San Gerardo de Dota is a little known destination in the remote mountains south of Costa Rica’s capital city, San Jose. The village is set deep in a valley, but is surrounded by the towering Talamanca mountains. Among the quiet forests of San Gerardo de Dota live a variety of animals and a wide selection of birds, including the famous Resplendent Quetzal and dozens of hummingbird species. Though San Gerardo de Dota is slowly becoming known for its superb bird watching, it remains home to just a handful of quaint eco-lodges and restaurants, making it the perfect escape. This area is a nature lover’s paradise, great for hiking and seeing countless different waterfalls and primary forests. San Gerardo de Dota is a great place to visit before heading back to the airport and will show you a completely different life zone: the cloud forest. Because San Gerardo de Dota is at a high altitude, the climate is much cooler and wetter than is the lowlands.

We advise you to make three copies of these documents. Put one copy in your carry-on bag, one copy in your suitcase and leave one copy at home.

Basic Tropical forests, colorful wildlife and spectacular beaches are part of daily life in Costa Rica. The climate varies depending on where you are, so pack accordingly.

  1. Prepare for hot, humid summers. Shorts, T-shirts, sundresses, skirts and tank tops in lightweight fabrics should keep you cool. Take a sweater for evenings at a higher elevation.
  2. Bring plenty of sunblock. Also include insect repellent, a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and a swimsuit.
  3. Take rubber-soled sandals or hiking boots for journeys into the rain forests. Flip-flops and sandals are great for resorts and hanging out by the beach.
  4. Pack separate clothes for evenings. Simple dresses are great for women, while men will do well in long shorts and a button-down shirt.
  5. Prepare for cool winters, particularly in the northern regions and at higher elevations. Long pants and long-sleeved shirts are a must, while a fleece jacket or a sweater is advisable.
  6. Take an umbrella if you plan to travel between May and November – Costa Rica’s wettest period.
  7. A rain slicker will come in handy while hiking.
  8. Take an electric converter and adapter.
