Day 04: Self-drive to Arenal Volcano.

Arenal Volcano located in La Fortuna, is the most iconic volcano in Costa Rica. Its perfectly coned shaped volcano was the most active volcano up until 2010. Since July 29, 1968 when Arenal Volcano first erupted, caused massive damage and destroyed the town of Tabacon, visitors came to witness the earth rumble and the lava flow from afar. Tourism and attractions in the area flourished. One of the most popular reasons to visit Arenal Volcano (besides all of the adventure activities in the area) are the wonderful volcano heated hot springs that come from the geothermal activity beneath Arenal.

Day 06: Self-drive to Río Celeste.

The Río Celeste is one of Costa Rica’s most spectacular rivers. Located in the northern reaches of the country, this river’s light blue color – the result of sulphur and calcium carbonate mixing – has attracted the attention of locals and foreigners alike! In addition to the colorful attraction of the water, the river also has several thermal hot springs and a large waterfall. Dips into the pool at the base of the fall are popular, as are soaks in the hot springs.

Celeste Mountain Lodge. Standard Room (B, L, D).

When in Rio Celeste, we highly recommend the tour to the Rio Celeste National Park, however you may also enjoy a guided hike of the Tenorio Volcano National Park.  Optional tours include horseback riding, hiking, cycling, rafting, a boat tour on the Caño Negro River or a visit to the Maleku indigenous community.

Day 08: Self-drive to Santa Teresa.

Santa Teresa is a booming new travel destination in Costa Rica, attracting beach lovers and surfers to its broad, white-sand beaches with world-class surf.  Since the jungle hugs the shore, you find lots of shady hideaways on the beach. Other activities offered in Santa Teresa and Mal Pais are boat tours, fishing, snorkeling, SUP (stand up paddle boarding), horseback riding, or a canopy tour on the edge of the Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve. The most popular activities in the area are yoga and surf lessons which are offered at several hotels.

Basic Tropical forests, colorful wildlife and spectacular beaches are part of daily life in Costa Rica. The climate varies depending on where you are, so pack accordingly.

  1. Prepare for hot, humid summers. Shorts, T-shirts, sundresses, skirts and tank tops in lightweight fabrics should keep you cool. Take a sweater for evenings at a higher elevation.
  2. Bring plenty of sunblock. Also include insect repellent, a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and a swimsuit.
  3. Take rubber-soled sandals or hiking boots for journeys into the rain forests. Flip-flops and sandals are great for resorts and hanging out by the beach.
  4. Pack separate clothes for evenings. Simple dresses are great for women, while men will do well in long shorts and a button-down shirt.
  5. Prepare for cool winters, particularly in the northern regions and at higher elevations. Long pants and long-sleeved shirts are a must, while a fleece jacket or a sweater is advisable.
  6. Take an umbrella if you plan to travel between May and November – Costa Rica’s wettest period.
  7. A rain slicker will come in handy while hiking.
  8. Take an electric converter and adapter.
