Day 02: Transfer to Arenal Volcano, afternoon hike, Tabacon hot springs & dinner.

Arenal Volcano is the most iconic volcano in Costa Rica. It’s perfectly coned shaped volcano was the most active volcano up until 2010. Tourism and attractions in the area flourished. One of the most popular reasons to visit Arenal Volcano (besides all of the adventure activities in the area) are the wonderful volcano heated hot springs that come from the geothermal activity beneath Arenal.

During the afternoon you will hike to the Arenal Volcano National Park where you can enjoy a great array of wildlife such as howler or white-faced capuchin monkeys, deer, tapirs, birds like mot mots, parrots, orioles and brown magpies. There is a wide range of plants growing in the area including various species of palms and bromeliads. Hiking is intermediate level & you will experience gravel and loose rock on the lava beds.

After your hike, you will be taken to the Tabacon Hot Springs resort to enjoy 25 pools that vary in temperature, between 77º F and 122º F. The hot springs at Tabacon are naturally heated by the magma found in the earth’s core. Spend 2 hours bathing in the mineral enriched hot springs before enjoying a delicious meal at the Tabacon restaurant and then heading back to your hotel feeling refreshed and relaxed.

Arenal Volcano Inn. Standard Room (B).

Day 03: Transfer to Monteverde.

Monteverde is a small town nestled between two primary cloud forest reserves.  It was founded by Quaker families in the 1950’s who left the USA and its war behind. Costa Rica is perfect for the Quakers as it doesn’t have a military presence.  The Quakers developed the dairy farms who now supply the country with the Monteverde cheese. Monteverde is a birder’s and orchid lovers paradise.  91 species of migratory birds are known to stop in Monteverde and it is also the site with the largest number of orchids in the world with 34 of 500 species newly discovered!  The famed Quetzal resides in the cloud forests of Monteverde.

Day 04: Hanging Bridges Tour

Discover the jungle trails above the tree canopies through a hanging bridges tour.  A bilingual naturalist guide will point out various species of birds, animals and plants along the way.  The hanging bridges are located in a 250 hectare reserve of primary forest.  The trails are a 3km loop among 16 state of the art bridges of which 10 are static and the other 6 are hanging.  The length of the bridges range between 22 – 98 meters long.

Poco a Poco Hotel & Spa. Standard Bromelias Room (B)

The town of Manuel Antonio also offers great restaurants and night life.

Basic Tropical forests, colorful wildlife and spectacular beaches are part of daily life in Costa Rica. The climate varies depending on where you are, so pack accordingly.

  1. Prepare for hot, humid summers. Shorts, T-shirts, sundresses, skirts and tank tops in lightweight fabrics should keep you cool. Take a sweater for evenings at a higher elevation.
  2. Bring plenty of sunblock. Also include insect repellent, a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and a swimsuit.
  3. Take rubber-soled sandals or hiking boots for journeys into the rain forests. Flip-flops and sandals are great for resorts and hanging out by the beach.
  4. Pack separate clothes for evenings. Simple dresses are great for women, while men will do well in long shorts and a button-down shirt.
  5. Prepare for cool winters, particularly in the northern regions and at higher elevations. Long pants and long-sleeved shirts are a must, while a fleece jacket or a sweater is advisable.
  6. Take an umbrella if you plan to travel between May and November – Costa Rica’s wettest period.
  7. A rain slicker will come in handy while hiking.
  8. Take an electric converter and adapter.
