Bat Program

Bats represent almost 50% of the mammals in Costa Rica (113 species). We invite you to enjoy this adventure discovering the wonders of this animals. The activity consists of a multimedia presentation for about 30 minutes regarding the natural history of bats, their classification, diversity, adaptations, reproduction, threats and more. At the end of the presentation a trained guide will provide you with a safe opportunity to observe some of the bats up close that were captured during the evening for research projects.

Birdwatching Tour

Chocolate Tour

This 2.5 hour tour will reveal the secrets and wonders of one of mankind’s favorite foods: chocolate. Originally from Central America, this plant has an extraordinary history. It was one of the most important products for the Mayan and Aztec cultures as well as for other Central American cultures. The discovery of America led to the introduction of chocolate in Europe transforming it into the product we all know today. The cacao plot which is not in commercial use was formerly cultivated in the ancient way and mixed with other forest trees. Several decades ago it was used for research purposes and currently it is used for environmental education showing the traditional processes.

Guided Walk at La Tirimbina

Rafting Class I - Safari

This trip starts at the town of Chilamate and goes all the way down to Puerto Viejo. The trip covers 11 km (7 miles) of mellow Class I water and is perfect for a relaxing float trip, nature viewing or a trip by canoe or duckie. This lower section of the river is very calm and ideal to observe the surrounding nature. Amongst the lush tropical rainforest, a huge variety of birds, various kinds of monkeys, iguanas, butterflies, sloths and even crocodiles can be seen. This section is ideal for bird watchers. Children and adults of all ages are welcome on this peaceful float.

Rafting Class II - La Linda

This section starts at La Linda farm where ornamental plants are grown for export. It takes between 1 ½ and 2 hrs to reach Chilamate. This section is quite convenient for families with children who are younger than 10 and want a bit of action. No experience is required and physical condition is not a problem. We also recommend La Linda section for groups of older adults who are looking for a safe trip. The whole run is surrounded by incredible scenery, countless birds, reptiles and an overwhelming amount of plant diversity. Both sections, La Virgen and La Linda, finish at the Aventuras Del Sarapiquí outpost in Chilamate where lunch is served for those who would like it to be included in their trip. Bathrooms, showers, changing rooms and other facilities are available at the base.

Rafting Class II-III - La Virgen

This trip starts at the community of La Virgen de Sarapiquí, one of the most important in the area. The section runs through impressive rainforest which towers over the banks of the river, exhilarating sections of Class II-III rapids and clear water pools. The trip takes place amongst a wide range of flora and fauna. The section is excellent for people who want to participate in rafting for the first time and are looking for exciting and challenging rapids as well as for people with previous experience in rafting. To run this section the minimum recommended age is 10 years. The whole section (La Virgen - Chilamate) is 7 miles (11 kms) long and normally takes about 2 ½ hours. It includes a brief stop with a fruit buffet and time to swim.
