Day 02 Transfer by bus and boat to Tortuguero Pachira Lodge

The next day you will travel to the Caribean lowlands, en route passing through the vast wilderness of Parque Nacional Braulio Carillo. Tortuguero National Park (47,000 acres) and the surrounding area is truly a birder's paradise. The beautiful swamp forests, freshwater sloughs, beach, river mouth and primary and secondary forest habitats support over 300 resident and migrant bird species. Bird enthusiasts visiting Tortuguero can expect to see most of these bird species within a relatively small area. There are no automobiles in Tortuguero, instead visitors can travel to most of their birding destinations by boat on the many canals that are interlaced throughout the area. Time spent birding on trails in the National Park itself can be the most rewarding, with opportunities to see flocks of mixed species of resident birds foraging in the dense undergrowth. Large numbers of migrant species call Tortuguero home during the northern winter, and provide excellent opportunities for biologists to study these annual movements.

In Caño Blanco you will continue by boat to Pachira Lodge, a nice jungle lodge with beautiful gardens and a swimming pool at the edge of the rainforest. Slowly you will pass small jungle canals in search of birds like Keel-billed Toucans, Red-lored Parrots, Anhinga's, Bare-throated Tiger-heron, but you will also be able to spot other animals like White-faced Capuchin Monkeys, Howler Monkeys, Green Iguana's, Emerald Basilisk, and many more...Besides that the beaches of the Tortuguero area is one of the most important nesting areas for the Green Turtle. Birds, Monkeys, Sloth, Crocodile, and Caimans have their natural habitat close to the river. Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui has a lot to offer, but the amount of tourists is still limited in this beautiful town.

One of the reasons for that is that travelers won't pass Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui on the average travel route. A good amount of the visitors are bird watchers.

This is one of the places where the Scarlet Macaw can be observed. The surrounding rainforest and the Sarapiqui rivier attract a lot of interesting birds like the Sunbittern, Broad-billed Motmot and Black-throated Trogon among others.
